SAFA Second Division outfit Tembu Royals knocked Premier Soccer League strugglers AmaZulu out of the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday evening.

Following in the footsteps of Maluti FET College, who thrashed Orlando Pirates 4-1 over the weekend, this high-flying Eastern Cape Vodacom League side battled their way to a 2-1 win at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

Sechaba Mofekeng opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with Zukisa Ginya adding a second two minutes after the restart.

Joseph Malongoane pulled a goal back for Usuthu on the hour mark but they weren't able to convert a number of second-half chances, much to the derision of their home support and thereby ending their slim chances of silverware this season.

The Royals, from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, started brightly although it was their more illustrious opponents who had the first real chance of the match as Sifiso Vilakazi headed just over from a superb near post free-kick from Marc van Heerden.

Mbongeni Mzimela then made a good save to deny Solomzi Mhlana from putting AmaZulu ahead on 12 minutes before the visitors got on the scoresheet.

Mofekeng made the most of a poor clearance by the Usuthu defence before firing home from the edge of the area.

Try as they might, Craig Rosslee's side struggled to assert their authority as the half wore on with their troubles compounded as Ginya doubled his side's lead with a deft header from a Mkize cross at the start of the second period, who himself moments earlier had forced Mzimela into a fine save from close range.

Usuthu responded strongly and came within inches of pulling a goal back only to see Langeni Gogo tip Willem Mwedihanga's goal-bound header onto the post.

But a minute later they did get their reward as Kagiso Senamela picked up a loose pass before feeding Molangoane who directed his shot into the net off the Royals' upright.

Molangoane came close to adding a second nine minutes later but his effort deflected off a defender on to the underside of the crossbar and out.

Stanley Kgatla wasted a further chance to get his side back into the game before Gogo denied Makhosonke Bhengu from close-range following another good delivery from Van Heerden.

With time running out Molangoane hit the side-netting but it wasn't to be as the Second Division side held on for the win.
