Nigeria were far more dominant throughout the 90 minutes and went ahead after just 23 minutes when Emmanuel Emenike opened the scoring. But the Super Eagles were unable to add to their lead before Efe Ambrose was dismissed in the 75th minute for a second yellow card.

And with all three points seemingly in the bag for Nigeria, Traore made the most of a mistake by Godfrey Obobona to slot home what turned out to be the last kick of the match.

Brown Ideye was a willing runner for the Super Eagles and a superb ball forward from Mikel John Obi almost found the striker in the box, but after bringing the ball down on his chest, he was well tackled by Bakare Kone.

Ideye then blasted over from close range after latching on to a superb cross from the right from Florent Rouamba.

A mistake in defence from Joseph Yobo after 19 minutes saw the ball break to Hughes-Wilfried Dah who fired into the side netting from wide right. Yobo was at fault again minutes later with Pitroipa and then Aristide Bance both doing their utmost to take advantage of his slip but the pair saw their shots blocked en route to goal.

Emenike though finished his 23rd minute chance with aplomb as he latched onto a Ideye flick following a long ball forward from Mikel before fighting off the challenge of two Burkina Faso defenders before flicking the ball into the back of the net, with the outside of his boot.

Burkina Faso found themselves with a good opportunity to net an equaliser from a Pitroipa free-kick on the edge of the box but Bakary Kone and Aristide Bance collided with each other, allowing the ball to roll clear and to safety.

Stallions keeper Abdoulaye Soulama had to be at his best to punch clear an Ideye cross from the right hand side with Emenike lurking inside the box before Ahmed Musa tried his luck with a toe poke from the edge of the box that was easily dealt with by the Stallions keeper.

Nigeria came out all guns blazing in the second half with Ideye smashing an early shot well wide of the target after being set up by Emenike on the edge of the box as Moumouni Dagano wasted a superb cross from substitute Wilfried Sanou with the ball hitting his shoulder before going out for a goal-kick.

Enyeama made a super one-handed save low to his right at the other end to push a Dagano shot wide of the post while Nigerian substitute Ikechukwu Uche blasted wide after a solid first touch had allowed him to bring the ball on to his left foot - from a left hand cross from Ahmed Musa.

The Super Eagles were reduced to ten men when Ambrose picked up a second yellow for a nothing foul on Pitroipa, meaning he will miss his side's next game against Zambia.

Uche then did well to take a sweeping cross-field ball down on his chest with time running out, to beat his man out wide on the left but after taking the ball goalward, he skied his effort over the bar.

Mikel, who had been excellent in the centre of the park, was next to sky his shot after a neat one-two with Uche.

And with just seconds of the match remaining, Pitroipa picked up a ball on the right side of goal just inside the box, before laying the ball back for Traore to smash home. Obobona was actually the first player to reach the pass but somehow completely scuffed his clearance, allowing the FC Lorient player to steal a point at the death.
