Alain Traore fired the Stallions into the lead on 34 minutes before goalkeeper Abdoulaye Soulama was shown a straight red for handling the ball just outside his own area.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Burkina doubled their advantage on 74 minutes through Traore before Djakaridja Kone and Jonathan Pitroipa added their names to the scoresheet.

Ethiopia started brightly and should have claimed the lead on four minutes when Shimeles Bekele latched on to a through ball before surging towards goal.

However, his side-footed effort from just inside the area cannoned back off the right-hand post and was cleared by the Burkina defence.

The Burkinabe lodged their first shot on target in the ninth minute, but Traore's low shot from the edge of the box lacked power and was easily collected by Ethiopia goalkeeper Zerihun Tadelle.

The Walya Antelopes were dealt a damaging blow just two minutes later when their leading scorer, Adane Grima has to be substituted after suffering a groin injury minutes earlier.

Despite enjoying the lion's share of possession early on, Ethiopia were unable to break down an obstinate Burkina defence. They were forced to attempt shots from range, Asrat Megersa's effort flying high and wide on 18 minutes.

Just three minutes later, Burkina thought they had broken the deadlock when Wilfried Sanou smashed home on the rebound after Charles Kabore's piledriver was blocked by goalkeeper Zerihun Tadelle. However, the effort was chalked off, Sanou ruled to be in an offside position when the initial effort was taken.

But they weren't to be denied on 34 minutes as Traore brought Kabore's lofted ball over the top under control before smashing into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Ethiopia were forced to make another substitution on 43 minutes, the injured Asrat Megersa coming off for Yared Zinabu.

Sewnet Bishaw's men came flying out of the starting blocks after the half-time break as they looked to grab an early equaliser, Saladine Said's free kick from 35 yards gobbled up by Abdoulaye Soulama on 49 minutes.

Just two minutes later, Soulama was caught dallying on the ball after collecting a back pass from his defence, but he managed to recover the ball at the last second.

Burkina continued to create chances and came close on 57 minutes as Paul Koulibaly's flicked header from the centre of the penalty area looped over the bar.

And the Ethiopia appeared to get the breakthrough they were looking for just two minutes later when Soulama collected a high ball just outside the area, subsequently receiving his marching orders from the referee.

Nothing came of the resulting spot kick as substitute goalkeeper Daouda Diakite gathered the shot with ease, but Ethiopia would have felt the equaliser was just around the corner.

However, their hopes were dashed on 74 minutes as Pitroipa laid off the ball on the edge of the area with a deft touch and Traore ran onto it, hammering a first-time shot into the left-hand side of goal.

The goal seemed to deflate Ethiopia and Burkina took full advantage as just three minutes later, as Djakaridja Kone bombed forward from his own half, playing a one-two with Pitroipa before firing a low shot past the onrushing goalkeeper.

The rout was completed deep in stoppage time when the excellent Pitroipa finally got his name on the scoresheet with a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

The result sees Burkina Faso claim top spot in Group C with four point from their opening two fixtures, while Ethiopia sit bottom of the group with one point and a goal difference of minus three.
