Elyounoussi scores against Bafana

Gordon Igesund's Bafana Bafana slipped to another 1-0 defeat as Tarik Elyounoussi's strike saw Norway emerge victorious at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Elyounoussi capitalised on some slack defending to fire the Scandinavians in front shortly before half-time, but try as they might, South Africa could not breach the visitors' defence in the second half.

Igesund will now take his team to Johannesburg for their final warm-up match against Algeria at the Orlando Stadium on January 12 to conclude their preparations for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Norway had an early half-chance as Elyounoussi was picked out by a cross at the far post, but the skipper's shot on the volley was well wide of the target.

He was soon in the action again as the hosts lost possession and the midfielder advanced down the left flank before sending in a cross that Itumeleng Khune watched sail over his crossbar.

Bafana's first chance arrived on 16 minutes when Reneilwe Letsholonyane released Katlego Mphela through on goal with a delightful weighted pass.

But the Mamelodi Sundowns striker didn't strike his shot as well as he would have hoped and Norway goalkeeper Rune Almenning made a low block to his right.

Bjorn Helge Riise tested Khune with a snap shot from just outside the area on 24 minutes, but the Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper was able to turn the ball away to safety at the second attempt.

Siyabonga Sangweni then decided to try his luck from distance just before the half-hour mark after finding himself in space in the middle, but his shot was always rising and cleared the crossbar.

Anele Ngcongca should really have done better when presented with his chance on 32 minutes after some good link-up play with Kagisho Dikgacoi, but the right-back opted to pass to Mphela instead of shooting and the danger was cleared.

Four minutes later Thuso Phala created another good chance for the hosts as his cross from the right caused Norway problems, but Mphela failed to pick up the pieces before Letsholonyane unsuccessfully tried to walk the ball into the back of the net as the defence cleared their lines.

However, it was the visitors who went ahead on 41 minutes courtesy of Elyounoussi, who linked up with Bjorn Helge Riise outside the box before cutting inside from the right and going past three defenders to fire past Khune at his left upright.

Phala was appealing for handball shortly after the restart as he fired in another low cross from the right that had the defender lunging to keep the ball out. The referee, though, was not interested and waved play on.

Alexander Soderlund decided to go for goal after Norway won a free-kick on 50 minutes, but his shot failed to trouble Khune, who watched it sail over the crossbar.

Tokelo Rantie looked dangerous following his introduction at the break and almost found an equaliser on 55 minutes after being played through on goal, but Almenning came out to narrow the angle and made the block. Phala should have done better with the follow-up, his shot lacking venom which was blocked by Kim Andre Madsen.

Five minutes later Sangweni came close when he just failed to turn in a corner at the far post which had eluded the advancing Bongani Khumalo in the centre.

Jorgen Horn nearly made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute as he headed a corner wide of Khune's left post on 65 minutes.

Almenning was called into action soon after as he made a brave block at the feet of Thulani Serero following another dangerous low cross from Phala on the right.

With 10 minutes to go Sangweni glanced a header wide from a free-kick before Phala wasted a glorious opportunity when he blazed his shot over after finding himself with space inside the area.

However, Norway saw out the final minutes to hold on for the victory with an impressive performance from their experienced players.
